Acid VS Mordant
The art of etching is a chemical process because it uses acid. Therefore, when a product is being etched, it incorporates designs, pictures, wording, or logos to be printed on products like metal, glass, etc. Acid is used the majority of the time in most etching projects. This is because of its high concentration. However, another commonly used product in etching is called mordant. Mordant is a type of dye that is used to change the color of certain materials.
Materials Used

- Aluminum
- A light silver, sleek material. Can be found on Nameplates, Tags, Instrument Panels, and Exterior/ Interior Signage.
- Stainless Steel
- Usually a dark or light gray color. Can be colored differently depending on the thickness of the oxide layer.
- Brass
- Is made up of copper and zinc, can be used to create various mechanical or electrical parts. Brass products and materials are meant to be handled with caution, as they can become extremely flammable. It is ideal to use in bathroom fixtures or doorknobs/knockers, as well as medical applications. This is because it is extremely difficult for bacteria to harbor on a brass surface.
- Bronze
- Consists of primarily copper in color. With copper-based alloys, this finish offers strength, durability, corrosion resistance, and wear resistance. A bronze finish can be found in construction, sculptures, trophies or medals, musical instruments, kitchenware, and in most industrial settings
